RRS Sir David Attenborough
UT 851 Polar Research Vessel
for Cammell Laird
In 2015 Cammell Laird won the £200m contract to build a new polar research vessel commissioned by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and to be operated by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). We are proud to have built a series of 100th scale models to demonstrate the size, design and functionality of this 129m ship. Due to set sail in 2019, the Rolls Royce designed vessel came to global public attention with an online campaign to name it. Although the popular choice of ‘Boaty McBoatface’ was turned down, it will live on as the name of a high-tech remotely operated sub-sea vehicle.
With improvements in our construction methods, despite their size the models remain lightweight. They have also been designed to allow easy deconstruction, facilitating any future changes in design.
