The Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) 2600 from Damen is a military vessel providing extended mission capabilities. At 96 meters long, it is an advanced military ship fitted with a 76mm gun with additional secondary and smaller guns available. It is capable of extended missions due to its energy and water-making facilities on board.

We were recently commissioned to make a range of OPV2600 models in three different scales – 1:100, 1:200 and 1:300. Each of the 1:100 scale models have magnetic moveable parts so the models can be customised to showcase different configurations.

Scaling a vessel at three different sizes is complex as the level of detail included varies yet they need to visually match whilst displayed together. Using a pre-defined set of parameters, we looked at what could realistically be scaled at each size and what details were imperative to include in all variations.

The models included a high level of detail which was created using etched metal. These etched components were painstakingly attached to each superstructure by hand. The overall finish of the models is a matte grey and when presented together they make a stunning fleet.
