RRS SIR DAVID ATTENBOROUGH
1:75 Scale

For The National Maritime Museums, Royal Museums Greenwich
The RRS Sir David Attenborough is a state-of-the-art polar research vessel. It is currently in the Antarctic with a team of scientists on board using the facilities to research the oceans, seafloor, ice and the atmosphere.
After completing five models of the RRS Sir David Attenborough, we were commissioned to build a special model with cut-away hull sections for the National Maritime Museum, part of the Royal Museums Greenwich. This special exhibition model is part of the Poles Apart Gallery where visitors can learn about what it’s like to live and work on board, and why studying the ice in the Arctic and Antarctic is key to understanding our planet and how it is changing.
The 1:75 scale model includes cut-away sections showing the science labs, engine rooms, and living quarters on the ship. We also modelled various cranes, tenders, helicopters, life rafts, and submersible research vessels, including Boaty McBoatface!
With an extremely high level of detail with many different vehicles to model, fibre optic lighting and open sections throughout, this was an ambitious build that took the team over 700 hours to complete. The finished model is nearly two meters in length and is a stunning replica of the full-sized vessel.
